Artist Statement
My work is motivated by our relationship to our innovations, our fascination with these innovations and how they shape culture and the way we think. I am also interested in human endeavor in instinctual terms. Speculating about the natural impulses that have become, through countless evolutions and extraneous influences, the drivers that currently power and possess us.
Oppositionalism, our culture is addicted to a reactive process of constantly redefining itself. Our constant quest to re-establish meaning on our own terms has led us into an endless process of creating, defining and arguing for its own sake. Inevitably new standards fall victim to inflexibilities as we stumble forward into the future.
In all my work a balance is at odds. Initially contact reveals a conflict between opposing forces; nature to nurture, confidence to desperation, strength to fragility, toxicity to purity and contrasts of scale. This binary conflict is complicated by hidden, lateral lines of meaning, subtle complications that take the meaning of a work in unexpected directions.
These ideas manifest themselves in art through the creation of works that include failings and attempts to defy or exceed expectations and limitations. They are intended to be seen as desperate and beautiful acts in the service of the heroic figure, myself as artist and innovator.
